Peninsula School is a parent and staff-owned
school for 250 children, aged 3 to 14 years, located in Menlo Park,
California. Peninsula offers a non-competitive, non-authoritarian
learning environment. As well as addressing the acquisition of academic
skills, there is a strong emphasis on the arts. Hands-on experiential
learning, conflict resolution, choice options, and social and emotional
growth are the foundation for learning in the school.
Children are grouped in multi-age classes,
typically with 16-21 children in a group. A teacher is expected
to create an intimate, open and safe atmosphere which nurtures friendship,
consideration and directness. Initiative, responsibility and a healthy
respect for children characterize the teaching staff. The school
is informal and relaxed. Play is considered to be one of the most
important sources of learning.
Peninsula School does not discriminate in
enrollment of students or hiring of staff on the basis of race,
color, creed, national or ethnic origin, age, sex, political belief,
sexual orientation or marital status.
